I’ve always been smart enough in school to figure out the right answer to a question but not understanding how I got the answer, was the challenge. In reading this might not appear to be a problem, but it is a serious problem in math when the teacher wants you to show your work. After several sessions with Ms. Betty, my Academic Life Coach, we discovered that the brain is a thinking machine and there are many styles of thinking. My challenge was that I knew the details, definitions, and not necessarily how everything fits together. We discussed the three thinking styles; what, why and how. After figuring out which I might be, we determined how to use each one more proficiently and to become comfortable in studying and knowing which style to use and the concept from each angle.

Being fifteen is different from any age so far. When my mom started Academic Life Coaching she began to communicate with me on a level that was different than before she started. Her listening changed and my hearing changed. I’ve always made good grades, but setting goals designed from parents and teachers caused me to be stressed. As an Academic Life Coach, my mom started helping me design action steps that we both came up with together concerning my grades, sports, chores, health, family, growth and friends that we could move forward to develop better outcomes. I think she’s great! And you will too.

I’m moving through life feeling great about my accomplishments in sports and academics, but being accountable in the sight of my parents and teachers could stand some work. Actually, I want to keep moving forward in my action for my future. Ms. Betty helped me to realize and design some well developed action plans for my future. We worked on measurable results, time set to take the action, time set when the action is complete, and direct communication. These accountability strategies gave me confidence and strength to have clarity on the action steps that I’m willing, wanting, and excited about taking.

I’ve always known that I was smart, but my grades were not reflecting this to me or my parents. I couldn’t figure out why I knew the information, but when it came to test time I couldn’t recall the information. My parents heard about Academic Life Coaching and decided to have a consultation with Ms. Betty. I will never forget our first meeting, she talked about different learning styles; Visual, Audio, and Kinesthetic and we decided which applied to me. After I discovered my learning style strength, we worked on the capacity to learn in each of the styles so that no matter the situation I find myself in, I can easily adapt and learn the concepts and details. The result was that I’ve learned to use my learning style both in class and at home, and I’m now an honor student.

Hi my name is Kiersten. I’ve always been successful in achieving a high grade point average, but finding balance between family, health, friends, school and pursuing my dreams was a bit of a challenge for me. Betty and I partnered for 10 weeks to design a plan of action for my future goals. She created a wheel of life and asked me to rank my current level of satisfaction in each area before we began the work. We started with my least level of satisfaction and worked our way upward using “Signature Perspectives” to create well designed actions. I was amazed that being coached by Betty felt natural and deeply fulfilling. She created a safe-space for me to feel comfortable and take risk. And as a result, I feel confident and clear on my future values and perspectives. I am currently enrolled in the Masters Program at the University of Memphis.
